Fiber Optics

Thoughtventions has performed extensive work on fiber optic sensors for harsh environments. Our work centers on fibers (primarily sapphire fibers, but also pure silica fibers) that can tolerate temperatures of 1000°C and above. One project involved controlling crystal growth using fibers to transfer heat into a furnace at the solidification zone. Another project demonstrated fiber optic imaging at 1000°C We have performed a feasibility study of a fiber optic slip ring, done research into the state of the art of Fiber Optic Bragg Sensors and High Temperature Sapphire Fiber Cladding. We have also developed a fiber optic chemical sensor (pdf) under contract from our source for high quality sapphire fibers - http://www.MicroMaterials.com (Laser Heated Pedestal Growth LHPG).

Most recently our work has centered on cladding sapphire fibers and developing the capability of single wavelength imaging through a multimode sapphire fiber.
