Global Warming - REAL

Real, Recent GLOBAL Warming?

How do we know that the entire earth is warming?

     Answer: We measure it.

How do we measure it?

Answer: Lots of weather stations around the world, plus satellite measurements.

What are the measurements?

Global temperature rise over the years

*** Big change in the last 50 years: Satellite measurements covering the WHOLE earth, land and sea - many places without weather stations.

Also: Lots of weather stations around the world - lots and lots of new high temperature records and new higher low temperature records.

We are talking AVERAGES!

The days can be warmer or cooler, the months can be warmer or cooler, the years may be warmer or cooler, but if you look at a big enough bunch of these together the temperature is getting WARMER!

Here in the US we feel the heat these days - ON AVERAGE.

US temperature increases

Are there other ways that we see the earth warming?

Less Ice!

***Less ice at the poles

Ice at the poles changes A LOT from the end of winter there to the end of summer there - but on AVERAGE polar ice is shrinking - A LOT!

Ice losses have risen from about 760 billion tons per year in the 1990s to more than 1.2 trillion tons per year in the 2010s.

That is an increase of more than 60 percent, equating to 28 trillion tons of melted ice in total

Satellites watch the ice shrink at the poles

Pole Ice Decrease

It used to be that there was too much ice to sail directly from the Atlantic to the Pacific north of Canada. In 2020, 32.97 million tonnes of cargo moved along the NSR, 1.5 million tonnes more than the previous year, and the Kremlin intends to boost this figure to 80 million tonnes by 2024 and 130 million tonnes by 2035. Currently these routes are only accessible for a short period in late summer

And where does all that melted ice go? Rising oceans. Spread out it doesn't amount to much, but that little bit causes lots and lots of changes
