Metal Clad Fibers

Thoughtventions is developing high temperature sapphire optical fiber cladding. These are noble metal claddings that prevent fiber signals from being distorted by surrounding harsh environments. We have concentrated on sapphire fiber cladding for high temperature applications, creating adherent Au and Pt coatings that tolerate over 1000°C and 1400°C respectively. Pt cladding has low optical transmission, whereas gold clad fibers have good transmission - in the IR. These coatings are bonded to the fibers, so they can tolerate higher temperatures than standard metal clad fibers.
