Scientists from the Joint European Torus (JET), a major nuclear fusion Tokamak test facility, came to Thoughtventions wanting a furnace that could safely burn radioactive carbon flakes left over from high power fusion operation. The flakes would have to be burned by first inserting the carbon in a crucible into the furnace, then heating the crucible and carbon to 1000°C, and injecting oxygen to burn the carbon. The resulting radioactive CO2 then had to be collected. All this had to be done in a vacuum tight environment within an outer vacuum shell through which helium would be flowed during operation. The furnace was designed in detail, the design was approved by the JET staff, and the furnace was fabricated. The project supervisor from JET came to Thoughtventions for a furnace demonstration and simultaneous 10-11 torr-1/sec leak test. The furnace passed all tests and is being used.
